SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimisation, can be a tricky digital marketing tactic because it works on the algorithm of the internet based on what people are searching. When done well it will help websites rank higher on search engines and therefore be more visible to audiences searching for particular topics, products and brands. In the world of SEO it is all about keywords, keywords and more keywords! Here we will discuss how you can use content to boost your SEO for your website and overall online strategy.
Keywords – Complete keyword research and focus on long-tail keywords as well as shorter ones. A ‘short keyword’ would be something like ‘healthy recipes’. A long-tail keyword could be ‘healthy recipes with low carb options.’ For the content that is crafted for your website (such and articles and blog posts), each should be made and optimised around a keyword. This is so Google can scan and understand the content to know what it is and how best to place it in the search engine results page (SERP) for people to find when browsing online.
Content – Once you have your keyword(s), the next stage is to write your content. Start with a good title – 8 to 12 words, max 60 characters and it must be simple but descriptive. Include the most relevant keyword in your URL and mention the keyword early in the page – in the first 100 words or the sub-heading. This helps what are known as crawlers used by Google to help understand the purpose of your page more efficiently. The content should be at least 300 words long and can stretch to even 600 or more. Use variations of your keyword but don’t overdo it (keyword density) – it must still read naturally. Sticking with the theme of the recipe, you could have ‘kids recipes’ and ‘recipes for kids’ for example.
Links – Ensure to include internal website links using anchor text – you should link to other sections of your site where relevant. Anchor text is text within content that has been hyperlinked to another page. For example, you could have a cake recipe on your site and within that, where you talk about the method of beating eggs, you could link the words ‘beating eggs’ to another piece you wrote on how to best beat your eggs.
Publishing and Performance – Now you are ready to publish your content. Your job is only halfway done because we recommend you use a tool like Google Analytics to monitor the page’s performance. Learning more about the performance can help you tweak as necessary to get better results. A good thing to know is the average amount of time it would take someone to read your entire piece of content and essentially that would become your benchmark – people need to spend at least that amount of time on the page. You can monitor performance by looking at bounce rate (the percentage of people who leave the site after visiting one page), time on site and pages per session. If the average time on the page is relatively high, this could be a sign of interesting content. The fact that people didn’t visit other pages could signal a lack of interest, lack of internal linking or even poor site navigation and user experience. If there is an action you want people to take after reading your content, then of course, this is something to monitor as well.
